On Friday, march 11th,2011, a wave of 15m reached the nuclear power plant of Fukushima located 6.5 to 10m above sea level. The cooling system of the three reactors were stopped due to lack of electricity, the generators were destroyed by the tsunami.
Today, one of the major contaminations is due to groundwater infiltrating into the reactors. 400 tons of water per day is believed to reach the reactor building basement levels.
It was decided to reduce these infiltrations by building an ice wall around the reactors. This technique is presented in details and its efficiency is discussed.
