ASCERTAINING THE DEFORMATION OF THE SUBSURFACE MEDIUM BY LISTENING TO THE EARTH’S WHISPERS

SALLE DU CONSEIL EN VISIO

What can the Earth tell us about itself? Seismic interferometry has spawned the reconstruction of continuous empirical Green’s functions over the last two decades, making it feasible to continuously and non-destructively monitor the evolution of subsurface structures from the very shallow layer down to the lower crust of the Earth. I work to understand the deformation of the medium under the combined effects of internal forcing and external meteorological, hydrological, and oceanographic modulation. In this talk I will go over some background and theories behind ambient seismic noise and seismic interferometry. The emphasis will be on comprehensive applications to disclose the spatial-temporal evolution of the Earth’s medium from local to regional scales by tracking the seismic velocity changes through continuous recorded ambient seismic noise.
