Volcanic environments present unique conditions that challenge stability on a large scale. This talk will discuss a novel discrete element method for modelling these instabilities, with reference specifically to lava dome emplacement and caldera collapse. We produce dynamic models that show real-time growth and collapse, with the additional abilities to add external perturbation factors and image cross-sectional strain accumulation. We also consider the need to obtain realistic mechanical parameters to incorporate within numerical models, thus discussing the importance of upscaling such parameters from the laboratory to the edifice scal
