Project description

The aim of the project is to establish temporal and spatial evolution of the Lower Triassic Buntsandstein Group, focusing on the Conglomérat Principal Formation.

The work will be mostly based on measured sections combined with interpretation of large photomosaics, in order to understand the relationships between the architectural elements composing this Formation; and will be performed along the Vosges mountains, which forms the western side of the Upper Rhine Graben, in NE France.

By interpreting the facies, architecture, and facies association distribution of the Conglomérat Principal Fm, and by attempting to best understand its transition from the underlying Upper Grès Vosgien Fm, and to the overlying Intermédiaire Fm, a new depositional model will be proposed, where the system might be the result of a distributive complex, rather than the currently accepted fluvial model. This has great implications for understanding the reservoir, but also to be able to predict internal heterogeneities such as baffles and barriers for fluid flow.
