Subject: Deformation regime and modes of rheologicalsoftening of the lithosphere in extension: example of the tethyan margins.

The aim of the PhD project is to understand the deformation regime of the deep crust in extension and the mechanisms allowing to decrease the strength of the lower crust (temperature, grain size, fluids, magmatic melts, inheritance). The study areas are located in the Eastern Alps (Campo-Grosina, Margna-Sella, Malenco) and the Western Alps (Ivrea-Verbano Zone and Serie dei Laghi), both permitting to examine the rifted deep crust. A part of this work will focus on the new material obtained via the ICDP-DIVE drilling project (http://www.dive2ivrea.org).

This work will be separated in 3 main axes:

  • Identification and characterization of the deformation structures (field work and bibliographic synthesis).

  • Petrological and geochemical analysis of shear zones (µXRF, EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, Perple_X, thermobarometry and isotopic tracing).

  • Geochronology of the deformation in the deep crust (relative and U-Pb absolute dating).
