Recruitment of permanent researchers at French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)  Earth and Environment Institute Strasbourg (ITES, France)

The French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) is among the world's leading research institutions. CNRS recruits permanent researchers through yearly competitive examinations. Open on 5th of December 2022 to all fields of science, the competitive examinations are divided into sections of the National Committee for Scientific Research (CoNRS). The deadline for applications is 5th of January 2023. The competition is open to all nationalities. Holders of a doctorate/PhD may apply to a junior researcher position. A research director position can also be open to senior researcher with an exceptional scientific record. However, differently to junior CNRS positions, such a senior position requires a more in-advance and joint preparation by the lab and candidate at least one year before the competition.

A successful candidature fulfils the criteria for each section displayed at https://www.cnrs.fr/comitenational/english/evaluation/CritEvalEng.htm. The recruitment entails two phases. The candidate first submits an application stating past research activities and a detailed original research project. The candidate is then evaluated by a national jury, and invited (if pre-selected or not) in spring for an oral presentation (usually 10 to 15 minutes) to expose her/his current and future research. More information at https://www.dgdr.cnrs.fr/drhchercheurs/concoursch/informer/default-en.htm

Prior to this process, the candidate is strongly encouraged to contact as soon as possible the French research laboratory they plan to join in order to prepare her/his application.

Our laboratory (ITES, UMR7063, CNRS/University of Strasbourg/ENGEES, France, ites.unistra.fr) focuses, among others, on scientific themes defined by the Section 18 ‘Earth and the Terrestrial Planets: structure, history and models’ and of the Section 30 'Continental Surface and Interfaces' of the CoNRS, namely.

Themes of Section 18 include: - Composition, structure and dynamic of the Earth’s interior, interactive processes between coupled geological systems, coupling and forcing between internal and external envelopes, geomorphology, formation and evolution of sedimentary basins and mountains, mechanic of geophysical medium, mineral and energetic resources and underground reservoirs. ITES is a leading competence center for characterization and modelling of surficial processes, of the Earth’s interior from the sub-surface to the deep interior including underground reservoirs and geological processes.

Themes of Section 30 include: - Processes of the critical zone and subsurface at any time scale; transfers and flows of matter and energy, hydrogeology and geomorphology, paleoecology and paleoenvironments of the Pleistocene, Holocene and Anthropocene, weathering and erosion - Biogeochemistry and physical-chemistry of interfaces, cycles of elements. ITES is a leading competence center for characterization and modelling of matter flows and reactive transport in hydrosystems.

We are seeking to help creative and motivated candidates to apply to the CNRS competition and join us as a researcher in all scientific fields of ITES, in particular in applied and fundamental geophysics, rock mechanics, sedimentology and/or petrology for Section 18 and in hydrogeology and geomorphology, paleoecology and paleoenvironments, geochemistry, mineral/water interactions, stable isotopes, reactive transport modelling, pollutant transformation, catchment hydrology and/or geomicrobiology for Section 30.

If you wish to apply and join us, please contact us and send a pre-selection file as soon as possible, preferably before December 15th, 2022 (candidature.ites@eost.unistra.fr) including:

  • A curriculum vitae detailing your past research experiences, diplomas and an exhaustive list of your scientific production (publications, seminars, oral contributions to national/international conferences, awards).
  • A 1-2 page description of the research project you would like to develop in our lab if you are recruited. The project must be in line with one or more of the themes of Section 18 or Section 30 listed above and should be relevant and complementary to research activities at ITES (do not hesitate to contact us in that respect).

Following the examination of your file, we will contact you as soon as possible in order to prepare with you, if the quality of your records allows it, the CNRS competition.

The dates/deadlines to keep in mind to prepare - with the help of ITES members - the preparation of your CNRS competition 2023 are as follows:

  • Sending preferably before Dec 15th,2022 your pre-selection file to the laboratory by e-mail (candidature.ites@eost.unistra.fr);
  • After a positive evaluation of your application, you will have to elaborate a complete research project with the help of the laboratory members and submit it (together with a ca. 10-page summary of your past research experience and scientific results) before 5th of January 2023;
  • If you are deemed eligible by Section 18 or Section 30 of the CoNRS, and invited for an oral presentation (decision communicated in February, orals usually take place in March, in Paris), we will help you to prepare the oral competition.

The laboratory recruits ca. one junior researchers every 3 years through the CNRS competition process. For any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at candidature.ites@eost.unistra.fr
